Justin is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with experience working with children and families, addiction, inpatient, and outpatient. Justin is originally from Olney, Maryland, and has also lived in Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Georgia.
Justin uses primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. Challenging and changing unhelpful thoughts of behavior focuses on the present and future goals rather than experience. Justin has utilized most therapy approaches by working at several agencies such as working at a psychiatric hospital, a methadone clinic, working with children & families, working with substance abuse, convicted felons, couples, and dual diagnosis clients. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a specialty in substance abuse & addiction. Justin has been working in the mental health field since before 2009.
At TTCS, his areas of expertise include more severe clients, such as dealing with those with more pervasive psychosis-like hallucinations, disorganized thinking, delusional (schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Justin frequently works with those individuals that have mood and psychotic disorders and benefit from calming interventions. Justin focuses more on the outcome than diagnosis – saying to the clients, “you are not your diagnosis, and that you are the only expert of your life. ”
It is essential to Justin that his clients feel they are the only experts in their own life, and that he is there to guide, not to make decisions for them or against their judgment. Justin uses primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. Challenging and changing unhelpful thoughts of behavior focuses on the present and future goals rather than experience. The sign on Justin’s desk is Mahatma Gandhi’s quote that says, “be the change you want to see in the world.” It was his undergraduate’s motto.
Justin realizes that every person is different. Every human being is a world, and each approach to helping someone is as diverse as each world. However, respect is vital in all situations. Justin enjoys video games & comic books. Movies & TV shows. In short, he likes a good story.
