Every client completes a comprehensive diagnostic assessment at admission. The assessment gives our clinical team a clearer picture of the client’s diagnoses and clinical needs, as well as an awareness of the client’s history and background. We then use the results of the assessment to match our clients with an evidence-based treatment plan and a specialized team of professionals.
Major depressive disorder, also called major depression or unipolar depression, is a serious mood disorder. Tender Touch has expertise in treating individuals with complex diagnoses including treatment-resistant depression, persistent depressive disorder, depression, and psychosis, depression, and anxiety, or depression and borderline personality disorder.
A person with a bipolar disorder, sometimes called manic depression, has experienced at least one episode of mania as well as episodes of depression. Individuals may be diagnosed with bipolar I, bipolar II, rapid cycling, or cyclothymia. Complex diagnoses may include bipolar disorder with psychosis, bipolar disorder and anxiety, bipolar disorder and substance misuse, or bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.
An individual with schizophrenia – including paranoid, disorganized, and undifferentiated types – may have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is not real and may experience hallucinations and/or delusions. People with schizophrenia often exhibit socially unresponsive and withdrawn behavior and have trouble expressing emotions. Some individuals may have complex diagnoses including schizophrenia and depression or schizophrenia and substance misuse.
People with anxiety disorders – including panic disorder, social anxiety, phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder – experience disability as a result of their response to stress. Untreated, their symptoms may prevent them from engaging in social and family relationships, meeting job or school performance requirements, and participating in other daily activities. Anxiety disorders frequently co-occur with depressive disorders or substance misuse, and some people are diagnosed with more than one type of anxiety disorder concurrently.
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by mood instability, impulsivity, fears of being alone or abandoned, and poor self-image. Frequent suicide attempts and/or cutting and self-harming behaviors may also be an issue. Skyland Trail treats individuals with a primary mood, thought, or anxiety disorder and a co-occurring diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Individuals with BPD likely will be assigned to our dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) recovery community.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Most people who go through traumatic events may have temporary difficulty adjusting and coping, but with time and good self-care, they usually get better. If the symptoms get worse, last for months or even years, and interfere with your day-to-day functioning, you may have PTSD. Getting effective treatment after PTSD symptoms develop can be critical to reduce symptoms and improve function.
